Water surface

Relationships, whether romantic or not, take work. When you enter into one with somebody, not only do none of your problems go away, but you inherit theirs as well. And when you find yourself beleaguered by too many of your own problems, it may feel nigh impossible to lend a helping hand. You may find it easier to be selfish, to focus solely on yourself.

We humans are social creatures. Even if you think you are introverted (as I am), that does not override your instinct to seek the company of your fellow man. Even so-called “nerds” join book clubs, anime clubs, and gaming clubs simply because it’s more fun to talk about and share your experience with someone than to read, watch, and play alone. Even the most die-hard introverts feel lonely from time to time. We all seek a sense of belonging, camaraderie, and love whether consciously or not. We are not meant to live out our lives as hermits behind desks, ensconced within cubicles.

Fireworks

I’m very excited to announce that my blog has just reached 10,000 views!

I want to thank all of my readers for following my blog. Sometimes it may seem as if I will stop posting, but rest assured that I will not! Eventually, I would like to reach a point that a new reader will not have the time to read all of my old posts while simultaneously keeping up with new posts.

Next goal:  25,000 views

Japanese sword

There are 2 kinds of people: those who rule over their emotions, and those who are ruled by them. Being part of the latter group does not guarantee failure, but being part of the former does guarantee success.

Here’s the scenario. A high school boy has a crush on a high school girl. He takes a chance and asks her out. Because he’s not her type, or she still thinks boys have the cooties, or any infinite number of equally arbitrary reasons, she turns him down. Eventually, when his heart’s memory of rejection fades behind his heart’s vision of hope, he takes a chance with someone new. But his confidence is still shaken from his first experience. He acts hesitant. Timid. Fearful. And it ruins his ability to connect to the second girl. A second rejection causes him to throw down his sword and pick up a shield. Though he will inevitably try his luck throughout his life, he is not the same man. He stops taking risks, always playing it safe, and never really chasing after victory with an open heart. He has lost the warrior spirit inside himself because he has allowed his emotions to conquer him.

A man waiting

Waiting can be a tortuous experience. A phone call after a job interview. A text message from a new lover. The results of your most recent checkup. Whatever the trial may be, time appears to crawl at a tortoise’s pace. You cannot force the tortoise to quicken its steps, and pining for it harder will only add weight to its shell and tar upon the road before it.

A green pin among red pins

“Don’t rock the boat.”

“You’ll stick out like a sore thumb!”

“When in Rome, do as the Romans do…”

I’m willing to bet you’ve heard one or more of the above platitudes, which have the common denominator of encouraging conformity. Despite widespread claims to a culture of individualism, most parents and our society for the most part still promote the opposite: keeping your head low, staying out of trouble, and not challenging the status quo. But there’s no need to harbor resentment towards anyone for pulling you back to the average, the ordinary, the normal.
