When you think that all is lost, you must not give up. No matter how much you want to lie down in defeat and pull the covers over your head, you must keep fighting. There is no shame in temporarily retreating to your loved ones, but do not allow yourself to become addicted to their compassion, or it will soon turn to pity. You are merely gathering strength so that you may step out into the battlefield with greater zeal and resolve.

Most people operate in 1 of 2 modes their entire lives. The first is to be results-oriented. In this mode, people impatiently pine for quick rewards. Some give up as soon as the going gets tough; we call those quitters. Others stress and obsess in short bursts of activity, hoping to god that they figure it out before their willpower runs dry; we call those strivers. Those with a results orientation often lack inner peace because no matter what they have achieved, they never feel like they are enough.

How many of you thought I wasn’t going to meet my stated goal of 8 posts this month?

I’m sure there were at least a handful of you. This month presented a good opportunity to write about this topic, a time when I would be stretched so thin that I might actually fail and have every excuse to do so. But there are no excuses. It does not matter that I got sick twice this month, that I had to host 2 friends in my apartment from out-of-state, that I was doing continuing education, or going to a Tony Robbins seminar, that I was working more than I’ve ever worked in my entire life. When you decide on a personal standard, you must commit to it, no matter what. No exceptions. There is not a human being on this earth who has ever done anything of note without setting a personal standard and committing to it.

For better or worse, the world is heading towards increased globalization. A global marketplace means more competition among employers to create better products at cheaper costs. A global workforce means more competition among employees for the same jobs. I am not an economist, but I do know that when there is more competition, you have to make yourself more competitive in order to stand out. This could mean going back to school, entering a new field, or even just learning a new skill within the field in which you already work.
