To some extent, the state of your house reflects the state of your mind. When your mind is in turmoil, you will be more likely to leave dishes unwashed, your bedroom strewn with dirty clothes, and unfinished paperwork scattered about. The hidden benefit of this relationship is that it also works in reverse. Clearing up environmental clutter helps to clear up mental clutter.

The reason is, whether you intend it or not, your mind creates and maintains a checklist of all the things that need to be done. This puts strain on your reticular formation (the part of your brain that makes you aware of things that are relevant), which diverts precious energy that you could utilize for more important matters. As you simplify and bring order to your surroundings, your brain will spontaneously erase those items from your mental checklist.

This post is a continuation of Secrets of Charisma, part 1 and it is meant to be read in order.

7) Stop correcting.

If he makes a grammatical mistake while he’s arguing with you, don’t correct it just so you can be right about something.

If she doesn’t get the details quite right as she’s recounting your last adventure to a friend, don’t jump down her throat because of a minor detail. If it’s important, you can fill in the gaps or tell your side of the story when she’s finished.

Sucking up, false flattery, or bending over backwards for someone who hardly cares about you is the opposite of charismatic. Don’t be fooled. 1) Be cool.

You feel disappointed. Discouraged. Like, what was the point? But that’s no excuse to throw in the towel. You’re just not good enough… yet.

But you can be, if you just get back into that ring! Stop analyzing your past failures to death in the hopes of avoiding future mistakes. If the world gave you a good whipping, don’t make it worse by giving yourself three more beat-downs in your own mind. In the end, it’s better to keep fighting for your dreams and lose than to sit at home and cheer for the winning team. If you don’t fight, you will have already forfeited. If you do fight but lose, at least you’ll have had one hell of a ride. (more…)
