In anticipation of writing this post, I sat in meditation for 20 minutes to approximate as closely as possible a mental state of being present in the moment. Although I think the best way to demonstrate such a mental state is face-to-face, I still think the choice of my words and the cadence of my language will convey it to you on some level. I am no expert in matters of spiritual enlightenment nor do I care to be, but I believe that everyone can benefit from meditation and meditation-like activities. Meditation is simply a process of becoming present in the moment.

Of course some degree of self-awareness is natural, but if you are stuck inside your head more often than you would like, unable to express yourself authentically and unabashedly to others, then here are a few ideas you may find useful.

1) Let yourself ease into it. Whether early in the morning at work or early in the night at the club, take it easy. Even if everyone around you is already chatty, laughing, having fun, and you feel like you don’t belong, still give yourself time to shift gears into social mode. You don’t have to go racing out onto the track from the get-go. Realize that most people need time to warm up the engine, as it were, before they can go for a spin.

Willpower, the workhorse of the conscious mind, is relatively tame compared to instinct and habit, the twin engines of the subconscious mind. Yet without willpower, you and I become nothing more than passengers riding along a predetermined course. The subconscious, the unthinking part of the mind, controls our thoughts and actions under times of great stress, fatigue, hunger, insecurity, and fear. If you are driving and a car comes barreling at you unexpectedly, there is no time to think about your speed, the other driver’s speed, whether to veer to the right, veer to the left, stop, or even how to brace for an impending collision. All of this is weighed and determined instantaneously by the unconscious mind. (more…)
