Deadlines.
Promises.
Work, projects, and obligations.
Fear of loneliness.
Fear of failure.
Fear of success.
Never enough money in the bank. Never enough hours in the day. Never feel like enough, even if you already are.
Life gets overwhelming at times. You may want to be motivated, to work hard, to face life’s challenges head-on, but while doing so, you also need to stay calm, to remain poised, to keep your mind grounded amidst the dust, hustle, and bustle of the real world. Feelings of overwhelm, of drowning under the crushing weight of the world, can often be traced back to a few underlying causes.
1) A lack of clarity. You may think you know the source of your anguish, but until you distill your thoughts into written words or a well-defined verbal statement, your mind cannot disengage from its frenetic search for answers. A clearly defined solution demands a clearly defined problem.
2) A weakened biological ecosystem. Good sleep is obviously important, and one of the several pillars that prop up your Parthenon of good health. Equally important, though often neglected, are the pillars of exercise and nutrition. Exercise enhances blood flow and increases oxygenation throughout the body, which means quicker and more efficient removal of the toxins, waste, and cortisol that wreak havoc on your physiology. Meanwhile, nutrition supplies a steady stream of reinforcements to the front lines where immune system and opportunistic pathogens engage in continuous, never-ending warfare. Even if the benefits of an active lifestyle and a balanced diet are not immediately apparent, a biological ecosystem hobbled by a siege of stress cannot restore itself without them. This is what you call resilience.
3) Thinking too far ahead. Don’t overestimate the challenge. Though previously cynical about meditation, I now view it as a powerful lens that can focus your mind’s eye on the most pressing issue at hand. Remember, the easiest way to break a bundle of sticks is one by one.
To summarize: clarify your objectives, bring balance to your ecosystem of good health, and hone in on one action at a time in order to get on top of your life, before life, gets on top of you.
