Throughout your life you will repeatedly ask yourself 2 very important questions. When you ask them will set the stage for failure or success, rags or riches, chronic sadness or daily fulfillment. The questions in question are: “How?” and “Why?”
When misfortune descends upon you, if you continually ask “Why?” Why me? Why is this happening to me?, then you trap yourself in a vicious cycle of self-pity, fatalism, and victimhood. Why is it happening? Because of bad luck. Why me? Because I’m weak. I just can’t do it!
When you get lost chasing after your dreams, if you keep asking “How?” How can I do this? How can I do that? How can I possibly succeed in the face of so many obstacles?, then you overwhelm yourself with too many things all at once. You plant seeds of doubt within your mind that eventually grow to blot out the sky.
The solution is as simple as flipping the script.
In the face of adversity, ask how, not why. How can I get out of this mess? How do I improve my situation, even if only a little bit? The word “how” has an extroverted nature. It gets you out of your head and into the environment where problems cry out for solutions. The last thing you need is another “why” to intensify your misery.
And in your reach for the stars, ask why, not how. Why do I want this so badly? Why is it so important to me? The word “why” has an introverted nature. It taps into your spirit within. Achieving your highest potential does not depend on accumulating vast stores of knowledge, on the multitude of “hows,” but rather a continuous and persistent renewal of your personal conviction.
