My last post reminded me of this great movie I watched a while back, “Yes Man.” It stars Jim Carrey as a habitual pessimist and recluse, always saying “No” to anything outside of his comfort zone, not because his days are already jam-packed with happenings and life, but because he is accustomed to living in a rut.
When he commits to saying “Yes” to every offer, every opportunity, every adventure he encounters, his life transforms into a hub of activity. As an example, he goes clubbing with his friends through the night, into the next morning, and up until the time that he is due to go photo jogging. From Korean language classes to flying planes, he says “Yes” to so many things that… well, I don’t want to spoil the movie.
His character’s story inspires you to maximize your lifestyle. If you’re feeling socially isolated, whether because you’re shy, lost touch with your old friends, or simply moved to a new city where you don’t know anyone, saying “Yes” to every invitation, no matter how outlandish an idea may seem at first blush, will expand your horizons and enlarge your circle of friends. When events coincide, like 3 birthday parties on the same night, simply spend an hour each at the first 2 parties and the remainder of your night with the friend to whom you feel the closest. Not only will you be viewed as fun-loving and personable, but your new friends will be much more likely to accept any invitations you extend in return.
Some people will tell you it’s a cheesy movie. Some people complain that Jim Carrey is typecast as the same goofy troublemaker. Well, “some people” don’t know what they’re talking about. When my friend first recommended the movie to me, I saw it 3 times in 3 days! Just say “Yes” to watching “Yes Man” :)
