The process of strengthening, toughening, restructuring is measured not in days and months, but in years. No one said it was going to be easy, that it would take only a single book, a single inspirational speech, a single wave of achievement to mold your mind into a success engine capable of driving you unstoppably toward your dreams.

There are 2 kinds of people: those who rule over their emotions, and those who are ruled by them. Being part of the latter group does not guarantee failure, but being part of the former does guarantee success.
Here’s the scenario. A high school boy has a crush on a high school girl. He takes a chance and asks her out. Because he’s not her type, or she still thinks boys have the cooties, or any infinite number of equally arbitrary reasons, she turns him down. Eventually, when his heart’s memory of rejection fades behind his heart’s vision of hope, he takes a chance with someone new. But his confidence is still shaken from his first experience. He acts hesitant. Timid. Fearful. And it ruins his ability to connect to the second girl. A second rejection causes him to throw down his sword and pick up a shield. Though he will inevitably try his luck throughout his life, he is not the same man. He stops taking risks, always playing it safe, and never really chasing after victory with an open heart. He has lost the warrior spirit inside himself because he has allowed his emotions to conquer him.

Waiting can be a tortuous experience. A phone call after a job interview. A text message from a new lover. The results of your most recent checkup. Whatever the trial may be, time appears to crawl at a tortoise’s pace. You cannot force the tortoise to quicken its steps, and pining for it harder will only add weight to its shell and tar upon the road before it.

So I started taking golf lessons recently. My first thought was, “My god, this is an expensive hobby.” My second thought was, “Good god, this is an expensive hobby!” And my third thought was, “Why am I so bad at this?!” I had no idea I could actually be so inept at something at which I thought I was fairly adept. I spent an entire lesson trying to achieve a single proper swing with an 8-iron club. Even by the lesson’s end, I was unable to make the needed corrections to my form. Searching for encouragement within my demoralized brain, I came upon the legendary Bruce Lee.
