Let’s say… you’re a writer. You’ve done a lot of reading, but you’ve never come across the book you want to write. There’s a unique emptiness out there that needs to be filled. You know you have the talent, the intellect, the creativity to fill this emptiness. You also secretly fear that if you don’t fill it, eventually someone else will. And yet, you idle.

So my birthday is right around the corner, which got me thinking about my age again. The last several years have seen slips and setbacks, frustrations and false steps, but the overall sweep has been positive. And I got to thinking about what advice 30-something me would want to impart on 20-something me.

Hey,
I wanted to quickly touch base with you lest you think I’ve given up on writing.
Yesterday I just completed my 3rd chapter, which I’ll be giving to my girlfriend to read. I plan to complete 4 more chapters and a rewrite of House of Dreams by the end of the year. I’ve noticed the pace at which I’m writing increases in direct proportion to how many distractions I can eliminate (I’m looking at you reddit).
I’ll write more for the blog as time permits, but my focus right now is the book. Thanks for your continued support :)

“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.”
-Marie Curie
Hating on others, criticizing others, discouraging and subverting others—these behaviors usually stem from a loss of belief in yourself. I say loss because at some point, every one of us did believe in himself, in his dream, in his boundless potential. But something—someone even—happened. And just like that, the grand edifice collapsed like a house of cards.
