rooster weather vane

So my birthday is right around the corner, which got me thinking about my age again.  The last several years have seen slips and setbacks, frustrations and false steps, but the overall sweep has been positive.  And I got to thinking about what advice 30-something me would want to impart on 20-something me.

To be fair, most of the mistakes l made were unpreventable (Could I really convince 20-something me to date this girl, instead of that girl?), or unknowable (Invest in this stock, and not that one!).  I learned a lot that I couldn’t have learned otherwise.

But there are also things I could have, and would have, learned if I had just known about them earlier.  Here are some of things I would have told my previous self:

Every decision you make has an opportunity-cost.  That is, taking one road precludes taking another; staking out one spot for your sand castle implies not building in another.  The question that haunts the soul is: Did I choose the right spot?

There once lived an old farmer atop a mountain carved with terraces.  He grew rice and vegetables upon them, trading his surplus for any goods he might require or desire.  Though he never left the terraced mountain, he received frequent visitors from the villages and towns below.  They came from all over the country because they had heard that he knew the secret to happiness.

Life is a slippery, muddy hill.  If you don’t keep trudging up, you’ll keep sliding down.  As we age, we’re faced with crow’s feet, thinning lips, and forehead lines.  Exercise and diet can be a decent bulwark against this erosion, but the tide of time knows no surrender.
