I’m a nerd. Always have been; always will continue to be. Whether I get the girl or not, nothing changes (well, maybe something changes). But at most, I would just be a ‘cool nerd.’
In my early twenties, I thought I had been fated to live unhappily ever after. While my friends dreamt of medical school, Juilliard, and Blizzard Entertainment, I aspired to just crawl out of my dusty hole and get splashed with a few stray sprays of sunshine.
And crawl out I did, atop a stack of books. I was A. T. Bui in Wonderland, and my (long overdue) climb out of the rabbit hole was made possible by the realization: that no matter how creative, smart, sexy, and original you think you are–or, at least, would like to believe–there is always someone who knows what you need to know but haven’t thought of.
In the military, this is known as ‘unknown unknowns,’ as opposed to ‘known unknowns.’ You just don’t know what you don’t know.
So stay humble. Suspend your belief system for just a tick. Open your mind, and open a book.
