A balanced stack of stones

Many years ago I had what I like to call “My best summer ever!” It was a period of 2 months where despite having no girlfriend, I felt a deep sense of happiness. In fact, my level of joy was so unprecedented and pervasive that I felt compelled to ask myself, “Why am I so happy anyway?”

The answer I uncovered was a series of needs that I had been meeting on a consistent basis…

Music collage

When I’m on a date, I often get asked if I believe in life after death, if we humans are merely a hodgepodge of proteins, DNA, and chemical reactions that will cease to exist posthumously, or if there is something else, something greater and more magnificent upon which to rest our unwieldy egos (well, maybe I don’t get asked in those exact words).

Considering such a deep question almost always triggers a series of new questions in my mind, questions like, “Why is she asking me this on a first date?” “Do I need to order another round of drinks?” or “Will Dexter finally get caught?” But I realize the question she is asking usually boils down to, “Is there such thing as a soul?”

A watch and coins

Time and money is on everyone’s lips, and if you’re not paying attention, you’ll soon find yourself with neither time on your hands nor money in your pocket. Fortunately, there is a powerful tool that can protect these scarcest of resources. This tool will neither take up any of your time nor cost you any money to acquire. It is free and instantly available to anyone who has the courage to wield it. This tool is nothing more and nothing less than the ability to say “No.”

A hammock between palm trees

My aim in writing is to stimulate the mind, rouse the heart, and stir the spirit. I want you to pursue your passions obsessively and unswervingly so that you may fulfill your every dream and desire. Working towards such ends may not always feel like work, so take care not to overextend yourself. Set aside time each day for rest. A talk with a friend and a leisurely stroll is preferable to facebook and “Angry Birds”. A relaxing shower is preferable to a beer (no matter how cold and refreshing it may be). And go to bed early enough to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. I prefer 9 myself :)

An old-style typewriter

The following is a letter I wrote to a friend a while back. I never sent it, but I’m sharing it now because I feel it applies to pretty much anyone who is having trouble moving forward in their lives.
*****

You will never be able to move forward with your life if you are still stuck in the past. Stop replaying old memories. Stop hanging onto old habits. I know it’s painful, but you must always move forward with your life. Never backwards.

Never regret the decisions you’ve made. Given your emotional state and level of knowledge at that time, you made the best decision you could have possibly made. Make peace with it. Remind yourself why you took this path instead of the other one. Now look forward and take a step. Don’t look over your shoulder in regret and nostalgia. Chin up. Eyes at the horizon. And keep walking.

Love
