a long road ahead

Discipline is hard to come by. Really hard. It is the virtue that separates the few who do from the many who talk.

It is what separates flat abs from love handles. Getting to work from languishing on the sidelines. Acts of creation from slow deterioration.

Failure is the default. You don’t have to do anything to get it. Do nothing and watch as it creeps up on you gradually, effortlessly, and mercilessly. Laziness is automatic. As is selfishness. And gluttony. No one has to work at being a fat, lazy bum. You just let yourself go and your work is already done.

I write it to motivate, to move, to change, to inspire–not just you, dear reader, but also myself. I write because the act of writing clarifies my ideas. It organizes them, brings my awareness to them, and affirms them.

I like to think of myself as a mechanic working to convert my mind into an engine of success. Like a piston pumping back and forth in perfect rhythm, I want my mind to produce the results I want, when I want it, and with predictable consistency. Writing is my passion, my love. But I didn’t really feel like doing it this month. I was sitting here today trying to understand why I would ever not want to do something that I love to do! I mean, if I can’t get my brain to engage in what I love, how the heck am I going to endure what I hate? As you can see, dear readers, this was a very important question for me to answer.

Have you lost your job recently? Did you and your girlfriend just break up? Are you feeling ill?
