A few minutes before midnight

For the most part, I subscribe to the philosophy of Look Before You Leap. Experience has shown that a single-minded focus on speed tends to result in many small achievements in the short term, while the achievement of long-lasting change is often quite time-consuming. However, there are occassions when we must instead pay homage to the maxim of Ready, Fire, Aim! Time may be scarce and you may only have a very small window with which to land an opportunity or evade certain disaster.

A clever fox

Two foxes are hiding among the brush watching a flock of chickens feeding in the barnyard. The younger fox says to the older one, “Let’s run over there and kill one of those chickens!” The older fox responds, “No. Let’s wait until they go to sleep in the coop tonight and kill all of them.”

I remember watching a video in college about a psychology experiment done with orphaned monkey infants. In the lab, some of them were given a metal statue that was intended to act as a sort of surrogate mother. Others were given the same metal statue, but covered in artificial fur to imitate their real mothers. And the last group was given nothing at all.

Hairpin turn

With the exception of life crises, most bad events are short-lived and do nothing more than ruin an otherwise good day. But do they have to do even that? When misfortune knocks at your door uninvited, many people are quick to label it as “just another bad day.” Chalk up another one to the devil’s own luck and wait to see what tomorrow has in store, am I right? I sometimes tell myself that because something bad happened, I deserve to just relax and recuperate until the next day.

But hang on a second. Is the day over already? If your day is abysmal so far, can’t you do something to make it at least acceptable? And if your day is already good, isn’t there something you could do to make it groovy?
