A lion licking his lips

I love big cities. The pep, the punch, the sap, the snap. The liveliness, the sprightliness, the animation. The inspiration, even frustration. Then perspiration, and at last, hard-won jubilation. It’s the kind of thing that makes a person feel alive.

If you ever feel like your life is boring, even meaningless, it’s because you’re too sane. You need to be a little insane to really enjoy life. How to do that? Simple.

Snow-capped mountain

“Lucky that my breasts are small and humble, so you don’t confuse them with mountains.”
-Shakira

I heard this on the radio today and it made me smile. It somehow reminded me of how I used to be self-conscious of my small, girly hands. That changed in high school when I took a career placement test that partly consisted of drawing lines to connect a series of diamonds. Apparently, my small hands and manual dexterity were well-suited for a career as a surgeon. I was never really interested in surgery since I don’t particularly relish the sight of blood. But upon seeing my results, my friend commented that I had a doctor’s hands. After that, I couldn’t help but look at my hands without thinking, “These are the hands of a doctor!”

A tree sprouting inside a mind

Have you ever felt dissatisfied with your life, and at the same time, not wanted to do anything about it?

When you’re in the doldrums, there’s a tendency to want to stay there. There’s a tendency to dismiss your ambitions–to take your foot off the gas pedal and just hope for the best. This inclination only increases the more time you spend down and out. Like standing in the rain in a wool coat, it only becomes harder to shake off the longer you wait.

Occassionally, willpower alone will be enough to sweep aside the dark clouds. But very often, you just don’t feel like it. I mean, you know what you should do. You know what you could do. But you just don’t feel like it. Often times you can’t change your mind without first changing your mood.

Palm trees swaying

Well, I’m back from Southeast Asia and I continue to put my life back in order. The transition from New York to California continues to be a difficult one. Car search. Job search. Girlfriend search (without a car). And no real computer. Just this ancient netbook I’m typing on that has “Leonardo waz here, 1480” scratched into the side. I left behind a great life on the East Coast. *sigh*

I’m a bit of a control freak. I always alwaysalways and sometimes like to be in control. And the fact that I have yet to establish myself here in California is making it all the more difficult to really enjoy myself. But I do feel that this, my 5 minutes of darkness, has allowed me to make finer psychological distinctions that will lead to a more brilliant life down the road.

2012 celebration

If what you did yesterday seems big, you haven’t done anything today.
-Lou Holtz

With the new year upon us, new year’s resolutions will abound.  But most of the time, there’s nothing new about our resolutions.  They’re simply verbalizations of what we’ve always wanted.  If you have unmet expectations or unrealized dreams from previous years, take this opportunity now to renew your commitment: to escape mediocrity and live a better life.

You’ve started the race and that is more than many would have done.  Now, continue the race.  Don’t look back with regret towards the past.  Don’t look forward with anxiety towards the future.  Just keep one foot in front of the other and keep moving.

Happy New Year!

Love
