I talk a lot about action. My favorite philosophy book: the Bhagavad Gita. For me, no other philosophy is as applicable today as when it was written. Still, non-action is occasionally preferable to action.
For example, shutting up during a negotiation until your counterpart stumbles or buckles under the pressure.
Waiting for that cute girl to get back to you instead of texting her yet again.
Resting after a workout in order to give your muscles a chance to recover.
Not eating those french fries. Passing on the butter. And leaving your phone on the table as you ask your partner about her day.
Doing nothing is often harder than doing something! It takes discipline. Patience. And wisdom. Your favorite author, director, or game developer is able to surprise and delight you because he or she stays quiet. She doesn’t explain that Harry Potter gets effing dark when you get to the later books. He doesn’t tweet that he’s working on a sequel to your favorite series until it’s nearly completed. He doesn’t tell you there are hidden 1-up mushrooms if you jump in just the right spot of bright blue sky.
Indeed, non-action is the purest form of action. It is action backed by commitment. Notice I didn’t say inaction, which is really just code for “I don’t feel like it.”
So wait it out my friend. Recall how patience has paid off in the past. Gather your faith. And if your nerves still fail you, start working on plan B!
