Hi everyone. My name is A. T. Bui and I am an infoholic. I would like to share my story for the benefit of other infoholics here today.
For 4 years, I imbibed useless information into my mind for hours each day. I chugged the daily news and took shots of random trivia. I guzzled detailed analyses of the stock market when I had not the money to invest. I drank hearsay of subversive conspiracies when I had neither sufficient ability nor sufficient desire to halt them even if proven to be true. I tossed back tutorials on a hundred new hobbies when I had not even enough time for the few hobbies I already had.
I was heavily drunk on useless information and my mental life was often in disarray. I tried many times to wean myself off of information or to even quit cold turkey, but I was unsuccessful. I would feel fine for 2 to 3 weeks before my urges became too strong to suppress and I went on another information binge. The solution I found is not to turn off the flow of information altogether, but to turn off the flow of junk information, information that is irrelevant, that cannot be applied to your life, or that does not contribute to positive emotions.
Do you ever wonder why you can never eat just one chip? Just as junk information has no nutritional value for your mind, junk food has no nutritional value for your body. So you just keep reaching for another chip because your body is not satisfied. When your body demands nutrients, do not keep feeding it empty calories. When your mind demands substance, do not keep taking in meaningless stimulation. A glut of junk information will clutter your thoughts as readily as an excess of junk food will clog your arteries.
I’m proud to say that I have been sober for 2 months and I have never felt better. I consume healthy portions of knowledge that relate to expanding my professional repertoire, I devour books on self-development that I apply to my writing and personal life, and I snack on bits of comedy so as not to take life too seriously.
If you must drink, then let us drink in the beauty of nature. If you must eat, then let us eat food for thought.
Well said! Love it. I too am an infoholic, although I can usually apply the information to my life… Except for the long list of DIY projects to complete haha
Thanks. I think a craving for knowledge isn’t inherently bad, but some of us (myself included) need to make sure to take the car out for a drive every once in a while rather than just pumping the tank until it overflows with fuel, if you catch my drift.
Yes I do & I agree wholeheartedly. Im trying to walk the walk more so myself.
Well done. Your brain will eat anything it comes into contact with, good and bad, so better the information be nutritional.
