A hammock between palm trees

My aim in writing is to stimulate the mind, rouse the heart, and stir the spirit. I want you to pursue your passions obsessively and unswervingly so that you may fulfill your every dream and desire. Working towards such ends may not always feel like work, so take care not to overextend yourself. Set aside time each day for rest. A talk with a friend and a leisurely stroll is preferable to facebook and “Angry Birds”. A relaxing shower is preferable to a beer (no matter how cold and refreshing it may be). And go to bed early enough to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep. I prefer 9 myself :)

An old-style typewriter

The following is a letter I wrote to a friend a while back. I never sent it, but I’m sharing it now because I feel it applies to pretty much anyone who is having trouble moving forward in their lives.
*****

You will never be able to move forward with your life if you are still stuck in the past. Stop replaying old memories. Stop hanging onto old habits. I know it’s painful, but you must always move forward with your life. Never backwards.

Never regret the decisions you’ve made. Given your emotional state and level of knowledge at that time, you made the best decision you could have possibly made. Make peace with it. Remind yourself why you took this path instead of the other one. Now look forward and take a step. Don’t look over your shoulder in regret and nostalgia. Chin up. Eyes at the horizon. And keep walking.

Love

Major life changes, even positive ones, are painful. The pain signifies that you have stepped beyond your comfort zone.

GATTACA theatrical release poster

“There is no gene for the human spirit.”

This is, by far, my favorite movie of all time. It never ceases to inspire whenever I watch it, giving me that much needed shot of ambition. The story takes place in the future when liberal eugenics is the norm. No genetic modification takes place, however it is routine for would-be parents to select the “best” sperm and egg from an extracted batch of their own gametes. Every now and then, a couple decides to conceive a child naturally leaving his or her genetic fate up to a draw of the DNA.

Glorious sunrise

My adjustment to life in California is finally complete. The main sticking point slowing my progress was my inability to let go of the past, the five-star life I had in New York.
